About western Nevada County
Western Nevada County is a unique collection of communities tucked away in the Sierra foothills. The approximately 93,000 population of Grass Valley, Nevada City and surrounding area is a mix of homegrown residents and transplants from the San Francisco Bay Area and southern California.
The different backgrounds of its residents create diversity in every aspect of the county. For example, Music in the Mountains seasonal concerts, the popular Penn Valley Rodeo or various festivals and street fairs, such as Victorian Christmas and the Thursday Night Market in downtown Grass Valley.
Although western Nevada County offers a small town atmosphere, major metropolitan areas are only a short drive away. Sacramento is 60 miles southwest from Nevada County, while San Francisco is about 160 miles west. Reno and Lake Tahoe are about 90 miles east of Grass Valley.
